Navigating Cell Phone Bans

If your school or district has a ban or restriction on cell phone use by students during school hours, StriveScan can still be used. Explore these options to support your students attending a StriveScan fair!

Option A: Print Paper Barcodes

Instead of students displaying their barcode on the phone screen, their barcodes can be printed and displayed on paper. Scanning works the same no matter how the barcode is presented.

Students or counselors can generate a printed barcode following these steps:

  • Students can individually register for their own barcode at www.StriveFair.com.
    • This can be done from a computer or any device.
    • After completing their registration, they can print the confirmation screen or confirmation email that contains their barcode.
  • Counselors can download student barcodes from the Event Dashboard to print and distribute.
    • Barcodes for all students from a particular school can be downloaded into a single PDF document and printed.
    • Follow the instructions to Print Student Barcodes.
    • Don't have Dashboard access? Reach out to the fair's coordinator to request access.

Option B: Utilize School-Issued Devices

Does your school provide iPads, Chromebooks, tablets, or laptops to your students? Instead of using a student's cell phone, they can use their school-issued device.

Students can register for a barcode at StriveFair.com using any school-approved device and obtain their barcode. Students can show their barcodes to the representatives, and the representatives can scan their barcodes from the screens of those devices. It works the same as if the student displayed the barcode from the cell phone screen.

Option C: Request an Exception From Your Administration

Most school districts allow exceptions to their cell phone policies, especially when the intended use is for a specific academic purpose. Counselors and fair hosts frequently receive exemptions in order to allow students to use their cell phones during the college fair after explaining to their administration how StriveScan is used. The following language may be helpful in your request for a policy exception:

For our upcoming college fair, we are using a technology called StriveScan. StriveScan is a valuable tool because it allows our students to share information efficiently with the colleges they're interested in. Additionally, I receive data about their activity at the fair, who they met with, and which programs they're interested in, which is beneficial in counseling after the fair and for future planning.

How it works: Students register for a barcode at StriveFair.com. During the fair, if a student would like to connect with an organization, they present their barcode to be scanned by the representative.

I am requesting an exception to the cell phone policy only to allow our students to visit StriveFair.com and register to obtain their barcode, then, during the fair itself, to allow students to display their barcode on their phone to be scanned by the college representatives. The total exception time would only be for a few minutes to register, then during the duration of the fair.

StriveScan does not sell or share student data with third parties — your students are in complete control of how they share their information. You can learn more on StriveScan's data privacy and security page, and their team can be reached with any questions at help@strivescan.com.
